Investigation of Jetties Construction Effect on Waves Propagation Pattern (Case Study Kiashahr Zone)

Abstract

Determination of a suitable location for a maritime structure is one of the most important concerns in marine engineering in order to reducing probable problems and optimizing the utilization of such structures. Construction of coastal structures, however has lead to changes in wave and current characteristics and consequently in the other coastal process in the area. Investigation on the construction effect of jetties can be the first step in considering the utility of this marine structure in the Kiashahr zone. The applied modeling system MIKE 21consists of several separate modules. The module used in this study is near shore wave module (MIKE 21 NSW). This module is applied for determination of wave conditions (height, period and wave direction) in coastal areas. In this article, the NSW module has been used to simulate wave propagation patterns before and after construction of jetties at the entrance of Kiashahr Lagoon. The results obtained from this study have indicated that the NSW module is accurate enough and has the capability of simulating wave propagation patternin the coastal areas. In addition, comparison of the wave propagation patterns for both situations (before and after construction of the jetties) have indicated that after jetties construction,wave height has reduced about 25 percent indicating that harbor entrance has become a calm place and wave percolation into the harbor  has also been reduced.
